Osaka is the counterweight to Kyoto, forty minutes away. It is a merchant city rather than an imperial one, and it shows in everything: blunter, funnier, less concerned with how things look, and obsessed with eating.
There is not a great deal to see in the museum sense, and that is fine. Come for two or three days of eating and walking, and use it as a base for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe.
The local word is kuidaore, eating yourself into ruin, and it is used as a compliment. Takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu are the three you came for, all cheap, all eaten standing.
Namba
The neon strip along the canal, with mechanical crabs over the doors and takoyaki stalls every twenty metres. Loud, commercial, and genuinely fun after dark.

Nipponbashi
A covered market where stalls grill scallops, tuna and wagyu in front of you. Prices have risen with the visitors, and it is still the best grazing lunch in the city.
Local tip: Go before noon. Many stalls shut mid-afternoon rather than at a fixed time.
Shinsekai
Kushikatsu: skewers of everything, breadcrumbed and deep fried, dipped in a communal sauce. The one rule, posted on the wall, is no double dipping.
Namba
Okonomiyaki cooked properly on the griddle in front of you, in a small room that has been doing it since 1965. Expect a wait and expect it to be worth it.

Nakanoshima
The top ten floors of a tower on the river island, with a pool and a bar looking down on the city. Business-district calm, ten minutes from the noise.

Small, clean and cheap, a few minutes' walk from Dotonbori and Kuromon. Nothing remarkable about the rooms and the location does the work.

Osaka is thinner on sights than Kyoto and everyone knows it. These four are the ones that justify an afternoon.
Chuo
A 1930s concrete reconstruction on original 16th-century stonework, in a big moated park. The park and the walls are the good part; the museum inside is ordinary.
Umeda
Two towers joined by a floating open-air observatory, reached by an escalator suspended in mid-air. More interesting as a building than most towers are as a view.
Naniwa
A district built in 1912 to look like Paris and Coney Island, then left alone for a century. Faded, cheap, slightly seedy and completely unlike anywhere else in Japan.
Kita
A few blocks of prewar wooden houses that survived the bombing, now full of small cafes and secondhand shops. Ten minutes from Umeda and a different century.
Osaka is the best base in Kansai. Everything here is under an hour on a normal train.
The Great Buddha, a park of bowing deer, and the oldest surviving wooden buildings anywhere. Forty minutes from Namba.

Osaka does this the opposite way to Tokyo, and locals notice. It is a small city rivalry and taken semi-seriously.
August is above 34 degrees with high humidity, and much of the eating here happens outdoors or in a room full of griddles.
Hotels are cheaper, the airport link is quicker, and Kyoto is a half-hour train ride. Many people work this out one trip too late.
